Gamma Phi cooks up fried frog legs

By eating just one fried frog leg, consumers are ingesting a whopping 415 calories, 1,152 milligrams of sodium, 43 carbohydrates and 22.4 grams of protein.

But with the Texas State Fair offering everything from fried butter to fried peanut butter and jelly, fried frog legs seem to fit the norm in the state of Texas. Especially when it involves digesting the mascot of SMU’s long-standing rival, the Horned Frogs of TCU.

“This is the first year we have hosted this event, and we are so excited about it,” Rachel Singer, Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropy chair said. “We thought it would be a fun way to get everyone excited about the annual Battle for the Iron Skillet, so we are serving burgers, chips, desserts and even some frog legs to get students together in one place and show our school spirit before the big game.”

With the Battle for the Iron Skillet on Saturday, Gamma Phi is hosting a cookout at the flagpole to get students excited for the Mustang’s game against No. 11 ranked TCU.

Beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, members of Gamma Phi will be serving food from Burger House and Tiff’s Treats in the sorority’s first annual Gamma Phi Frog Fry. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased on the bridge of the Hughes Trigg Student Center, or at the event. Students can also purchase “Fry the Frogs” t-shirts at Gamma Phi’s tables from 11-3 p.m. through Wednesday.

“I would eat fried frog legs only if I could kill them myself. Something I hope the Mustangs can do this weekend against TCU,” Jesse Dawkins, a senior at SMU, said.

Students can also enter raffle drawings to win a $100 cash prize and gift cards from McCartney’s, JD’s Chippery, Mustang Donuts and Goff’s Hamburgers. There will also be a necklace from The Impeccable Pig given out and a private party hosted by The Blue Jeans Bar.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Fire USA, a youth organization that hosts programs in youth leadership, after school groups and camping and environmental education.
