This weekend’s matches during the annual SMU Classic were less than satisfying for the SMU men’s soccer team. The game held on Friday evening ended in a 1-1 tie against University of Alabama-Birmingham and Sunday’s 3-1 loss was against Missouri State.

SMU and UAB went into double over time and still were unable to come out with a definite winner. UAB player, Victor Sambade, scored first in the 37th minute of play, and just seven minutes later the Mustangs answered when defender Leone Cruz scored the only goal for SMU with an assist from forward Arthur Ivo. It was Ivo’s first assist of the season, and Cruz’s second goal of the season.

Ivo also had five shots on goal throughout the game, though none of them were able to secure the win for the Mustangs. And although SMU has found success in the power and organization of their corner kicks this season, none of their six corner kicks this game broke the draw. SMU managed to out shoot UAB by nine more shots on goal, 22 to 13.

“Overall I thought that against UAB, it was a good performance,” head coach Tim McClements said. “I wish we had gotten a better result, and I think we generated enough opportunities to get that result.”

A day’s rest did not help the Mustangs win their match against Missouri State on Sunday.

“The one word I used to the players was ‘disappointing,'” McClements said after the loss.

SMU was ahead 1-0 at halftime thanks to midfielder Kekoa Osorio’s first goal of the season off an assist from midfielder Payton Hickey. Missouri State proceeded to tie up and eventually take the lead in the second half. McClements claims that the first Missouri goal was due to a team miscommunication and the following two were due to individual mistakes.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the only two SMU students represented in the All-Tournament Team were Osorio and forward Dane Saintus. The final placements of the tournament put UAB in first, Missouri State in second, Houston Baptist in third and SMU in fourth.

The Mustangs will play another home match against Centenary at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
