1. Jan. 21, 2006: A female SMU student says she met a male SMU student at an off-campus fraternity party. The female student says that later, he took her to his dorm room and raped her. The alleged victim sought action through the office of the Dean of Student Life. The suspect was suspended from the university, and has filed a $750,000 lawsuit against the university, alleging that the school wrongly identified him as a rapist.
2. March 3, 2006: A student told SMU Police her boyfriend sexually assaulted her at the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house. Police did not issue a crime alert. Police report no follow-up action on the case, which remains open.
3. March 4, 2006: A male student attempted to sexually assault a female student at an unidentified fraternity house, according to a third party. Police contacted the female student, who said she did not want to pursue any criminal charges. Police did not issue a crime alert.
4. March 25, 2006: A woman not affiliated with SMU told police a male SMU student sexually assaulted her in the SMU Apartments at 3130 Daniel Street. Two days later, police issued a crime alert. It said police arrested the suspect and charged him with sexual assault. SMU Police Chief Richard Shafer said that the suspect was not indicted on any charges.
5. May 3, 2006: A female student told police a male student sexually assaulted her at about 6:30 a.m. while she was sleeping in a dorm room in Smith Hall. Police took the victim to Parkland Hospital for medical treatment and a forensic exam and issued a crime alert. Police identified the suspect, but the student decided not to file criminal charges.
6. Sept. 23, 2006. A female student reported to police she was sexually assaulted in Cockrell-McIntosh Hall. Police did not issue a crime alert. SMU Police reported no follow-up action.
7. Oct. 21, 2006: A male student attempted to sexually assault a female student in his dorm room, according to the victim’s residence hall assistant. Police issued a crime campus alert on Oct. 26. SMU Police reported no follow-up action.
8. Dec. 27, 2006: A woman not affiliated with SMU said three men sexually assaulted her at about 1:30 a.m. in her car in the parking lot in front of Moore Hall. Police issued a crime alert that described the three suspects: “Josh” is white, 6’2″ about 210 pounds, has buzz-cut blond hair, green eyes and a barbed wire tattoo on his left upper arm. “Brandon” is Hispanic, 6’0″, about 200 pounds, short brown hair, brown eyes, medium build. “Steven” is white, 5’9″, about 160 pounds, brown hair, thin. All three men were 19 to 25 years old. This was the only crime alert in 2006 that includes a description of a sexual assault suspect. SMU Police reported no follow-up action.
