Fox’s new TV series “Glee,” which scored more than 10 million viewers, has “Twilight”-style hype. When the second episode was premiered at last month’s Comic-Con, it was greeted with a room full of screaming fans.
“Glee” is co-created by Ryan Murphy, the creator of “Nip/Tuck.” This new comedy appeals to the aspiring underdog in all of us. Remakes of popular songs such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Gold Digger,” “Push It” and “Take A Bow” were featured. This show will make you want to dance, sing and wish you were a part of a club like “Glee.” Beware, you might find yourself breaking out dancing and singing in the hallways and on street corners of campus. You might find yourself thinking that it’s time to put all that shower and car singing to good use.
This series follows McKinley High School’s optimistic Spanish teacher Will Schuester, who has the idea of taking over the school’s Glee Club, “New Directions,” in hopes of restoring it to its former glory.
The endearing yet motley crew of “Glee” consists of Rachel Berry, the overly ambitious and talented singer who is bullied by the cheerleaders (“Cheerios”), as well as the football players who always throw blue slurpees in her face; Kurt Hammel, a male soprano who is also bullied and almost tossed daily into the school dumpster by the football team; Artie Abrams, a wheelchair-bound guitar player who loves to rock and roll; Mercedes Jones, a blinged-out diva who refuses to sing back-up; and Tina Cohen-Chang, an Asian-American goth who isn’t going to let her stutter get in the way of her talent.
In last week’s third episode titled “Acafellas,” Will forms an all-male a capella vocal group, and spends more time building his own confidence than he does with the Glee Club. The club, in turn, hires a well-known choreographer to help coach them to Nationals.
Threads are quickly unraveling in the Glee Club. Mercedes realizes she has a crush on Kurt as they begin spending more time with each other. When she approaches Kurt about it at the Glee Club fundraising carwash, he tells her he’s in love with someone else. Mercedes, thinking he’s referring to the lovely Rachel, busts the front windshield of his car and begins singing, “Bust Your Windows.”
Rachel and Finn are conflicted in how they should deal with their passionate kiss and buried emotions. Meanwhile, Kurt comes out and tells the apologetic Mercedes, “I’m gay.”
Mercedes, despairing over ever having a boyfriend, says to Rachel, “No one even looks at us!” The Glee members’ spirits sink as they feel more invisible than ever.
The Acafellas is so excited that one of their members has convinced Josh Groban to hear them perform. Groban comes backstage after the show and tells the group member to back off and stop stalking him! Imagine the surprise, horror and embarrassment the other members of the group felt!
Will and the Glee members finally learn that when it all boils down, it’s your imperfections that make you perfect, unique and “you.” They wouldn’t be who they are without them.
Get ready for the fourth episode titled, “Preggers.” Kurt joins the football team just to impress his father. Finn and Quinn’s relationship develops an unexpected twist. Rachel feels her star is fading and quits Glee when she feels Will has replaced her with the new girl, Tina. Who knows how the drama will go down?! Get ready to get your “GLEEk” on.
Glee airs on FOX this Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. Haven’t seen the first few episodes? Go to Hulu.com to watch the first three episodes. Don’t forget to go on iTunes to buy the Glee cast’s music!
