How’s this for a reality check? There are more than 20,000 refugees living within a couple of miles from SMU. Crazy, huh? What’s even harder to imagine is that many of them didn’t really want to leave their home countries. They left because their lives depended on it, fleeing from violence or war.
SMU’s Department of Anthropology is trying to inform students about this reality with the Forced Migration Innovation Project. “By getting involved with refugees at any level, a student can not only help change a life here in America, but it might just save their own,” said Faith Nibbs, the director of the project. She believes this project can broaden students’ perspective of the world in ways they can never imagine.
