The SMU women’s polo team is ending the semester on a high note after slaying the TCU team 15-4 at their match at the TCU training facility in Denton on Sunday.
It was an exciting win, for throughout there the first two chukkers the two teams were just about neck and neck, with a mild one to two point difference. Then, in the second half of the game, SMU took the lead by storm, giving each player multiple opportunities to shine — and score. Memorable moments included Team Captain Emma Blackwood’s solid several point streak in the third chukker, while Katherine Bentfield exhibited a consistent ability to score penalty shots.
But the ferocity that the players demonstrate on the field, stays on the field. After the match, both teams congratulated each other as they dismounted and returned the horses to the barn.
“These girls are all so sweet,” said Caroline Wilcoxon, field captain of the women’s team. “We’ll probably all go to lunch together after this.”
While the men’s team did not have an official match this weekend, they are also finishing off the fall season on a high note. At their tournament in Cornell at the end of November, the boys beat both UVA and Yale to advance to the finals, where they lost by a single point in the final chukker against CSU.
Both the men’s and women’s team will be hanging up their hats, or helmets, until next semester when the polo season officially kicks off.
