SMU splits final road games during weekend matches

The women’s soccer team wrapped up the road portion of its 2009 schedule by splitting a pair of weekend games with Memphis and the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Against the Lady Tigers on Friday, SMU (5-9-1, 3-4-1 Conference USA) received four shots from sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Eidson but could not score against goalkeeper Elis Kuhar-Pitters.

“Really we created a lot of chances,” head coach Brent Erwin said. “We played very well.”

Memphis (11-5-0, 6-2-0) recorded its ninth shutout of the season as junior midfielder Ashley Berra turned two second-half corner kicks into assists for a 2-0 win.

After the Lady Tigers scored on the first corner kick, Erwin said, “We were fighting back. We were pushing to tie when they got another goal.”

On Sunday, freshman forward Kenzie Scovill picked up her team-leading fourth goal of the season with a strike in the 62nd minute against the UAB Blazers (10-5-1, 4-3-1).

Sophomore forward Logan May was credited with an assist on the play, and the Mustangs went on to a 1-0 victory.

“That was an absolutely fantastic game,” Erwin said, stating that with poor weather in Birmingham and the Mustangs playing their second road game in three days, his team had every reason to lose.

“We had every reason to give up and give in, but the girls played incredibly well,” he said.

Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Webb made five saves in each game, bringing her season total to 70.

“Every game she gets better and better,” Erwin said. “She’s facing new situations, she’s getting more experience and she’s learning from it.”

The team returns home this weekend with matchups against the No. 12 University of Central Florida (12-3-1, 7-1-0) and University of Southern Mississippi (4-10-0, 0-8-0).

“It’s nice to come back home,” the head coach said. “We need everybody to come out and support us.”

SMU will kick off against the UCF Knights Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting the Southern Miss Golden Eagles Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be at Westcott Field.
