SMU ranked No. 4 in C-USA

Despite splitting a pair of weekend matches on the road, the SMU men’s soccer team moved to the fourth spot in Conference USA polls and earned a spot in ESPN’s Top 10 plays on SportsCenter.com.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Rosenbaum scored a 95-yard goal in the second half to put SMU up 3-1, helping to seal the win for the Mustangs (6-6-1, 2-2-1) with his first collegiate career goal. The goal was shot from the Mustangs’ backfield and bounced over the head of Tulsa goalkeeper, Andy Aguilar, before rolling into the net.

Tulsa (9-4-2, 4-1-1) scored first with a 22-yard assist, but SMU’s Josue Soto answered back with a penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1. Soto, a junior midfielder from Houston, scored for the second consecutive game after putting SMU up 1-0 over South Carolina on Oct. 14.

SMU gained the lead at the 25-minute mark with a ten-yard cross pass to Pana Vasquez from Dane Saintus. Vasquez’s goal was the first of his career as a Mustang.

With his fifth assist of the season, Saintus continues to lead the team with 19 points and seven goals. Saintus also leads the team with 16 shots on goal.

Despite Tulsa scoring in the final ten minutes of play, the Mustangs defeated the Golden Hurricanes, tying them for fourth in conference standings.

Following his performance at Tulsa, Rosenbaum was named C-USA’s Player of the Week after receiving national coverage on his goal from over three national publications. Rosenbaum’s first collegiate goal was also the freshman’s first career shot.

The team will host the University of Central Florida (6-5-2, 2-3-0) on Oct. 31 at Westcott field at 7 p.m.
