Located in West Village, Tom Tom Asian Grill is the perfect stop if you want to sample a variety of Asian flavors.
Tom Tom prides itself on blending classic Asian flavors with a European or American style. Salads include Chinese Duck Salad – with roast chicken, greens, radicchio, and taro root tossed in a ginger and peanut dressing – and an Ahi Tuna Sashimi Salad, which comes with sashimi tuna seared rare in a spicy vinaigrette.
If you don’t plan on eating a salad for dinner, start out with some classic Japanese appetizers like hot miso soup, salted edamame, crispy shrimp or vegetable tempura. Tom Tom also has an extensive array of sushi rolls.
For the main entrée, try something from the grill or from the wok. Grilled dishes include Orange Chicken, Shrimp Coconut Curry and Tamarind Barbecue Salmon. Wok dishes are a little more traditional. The Pad Thai is standard and flavorful, although it’s nothing special. The Snap and Snow Pea Stir-Fry, while tasty, is also very ordinary. The Garlic Ginger Beef is a better choice. The beef, snow peas and broccoli are infused with a refreshing lime flavor and served over a bed of noodles. It is delicious, but could use some more meat. Unfortunately, Tom Tom’s fried rice is bland. Three of my friends ordered the entrée, and all three had to add hot sauce or soy sauce to put some zest into the dish.
There is one caveat to dinner at Tom Tom: don’t go in a large group. By the time the food is served, many entrees are already cold. Service is also slower for large groups. Dessert, however, is a redeeming quality. The restaurant offers some interesting takes on dessert, like Fruit Sushi. The result is a fruity, seemingly healthy blend of rice, yogurt, and cut-up pieces of pear and other fruit. Another delicious dessert is the Crispy Cheesecake – fried cheesecake served with Crème Anglaise and raspberry coulis.
The restaurant has an extensive drink menu, including a blackberry mojito. Happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and $1 sushi is available on Thursdays. The restaurant is located at 3699 McKinney Ave.
