SMU hands Rice shutout, ties Houston

After shutting out Rice on Friday for their first Conference USA win of the season, the Mustangs played Houston to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Sunday at Westcott Field.

On Friday, SMU (3-7-1, 1-2-1 C-USA) received five saves from sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Webb en route to a 1-0 win over the Owls (2-8-2, 0-4-0).

It was Webb’s second shutout of the year, both occurring at Westcott Field.

The only scoring of the game came when freshman midfielder Mallory Baum knocked in her first career goal in the 37th minute.

On Sunday against the Cougars (3-7-1, 1-2-1), freshman midfielder Allegra Nigh scored the first goal of her career in the 40th minute of play, receiving an assist from sophomore forward Logan May.

Nigh became the third SMU freshman in the last three games to score her first career goal and her strike gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead at halftime.

But with less than 10 minutes left in regulation, Houston midfielder Avery Blasi kicked in her second goal of the season to knot the score and send the game into overtime.

SMU took three unsuccessful shots in the first overtime period before the Cougars pressured the Mustang defense with four shots in the second, but both Webb and Houston goalkeeper Lauren Frazier were solid. The game ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

With the tie – each team’s first of the season – SMU remains undefeated all-time against the Cougars (0-9-1).

This weekend the Mustangs will look to improve on their winning home record (2-1-1) with a pair of contests against C-USA opponents.

SMU will host the Marshall Thundering Herd (10-2-0, 3-1-0) Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on the East Carolina Pirates (7-3-2, 2-2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.
