Weather can’t stop the Mustangs

Despite wet and windy conditions, the SMU women’s golf team gave its best performance of the season so far, posting a 53-over 917 to finish seventh out of 20 schools at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational at the University of Colorado.

The Mustangs were in first place after the end of the first round with a 1-under 287, giving SMU a three-shot lead over Texas Tech. Rain and wind forced officials to postpone the latter part of the second round. Players had to play both the second and third rounds the next day.

After the opening round score of 1-under 287, the team posted rounds of 316 and 314 in the second and third rounds, respectively, to fall from first to seventh place.

Individually, two freshmen led the Mustangs throughout the invitational. Tanya Wadhwa, who has been SMU’s top golfer in all three invitationals this season, carded a 9-over 225 to finish in 11th place. Felicia Espericueta finished 28th with a 14-over 230.

Texas Tech, who was second after the first round, finished first with an 18-over 882 total score, while Nebraska and San Diego State University took second and third with a 30-over 894 and a 37-over 901, respectively.

Heather Farr, whom the tournament is named after, was the childhood friend of Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. Farr was on the verge of becoming a star on the PGA tour when she was diagnosed with a rare and serious form of breast cancer. This tournament was held as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Mustangs’ next competition will be held in San Antonio at the Alamo Invitational, Oct. 26-27. It is hosted by The University of Texas at San Antonio.
