At the beginning of this semester, Ed Board was ready and rarin’ to go. We were stocked full of ideas and opinions, and we were ready to write. Almost 60 issues later, we’re exhausted. So rather than discuss Iraq, the presidential election, gas prices, the Beijing Olympics, the rising cost of food or anything important like that, we’re going to get all nostalgic on you and take a look back at this semester because, oh, what a semester it has been.
It was finally decided, as if we didn’t already know, that the Bush library would be tucking itself in on the Hilltop, June Jones left Hawaii for Dallas for $10 million, and President Turner approved almost all of the Task Force recommendations without actually changing anything.
We saw the Crum Basketball Center go up and professor salaries go nowhere. The women’s basketball team dribbled its way into the NCAA tournament, and the jocks at SMU got a new major tailor-made for their future.
We suggested some names for the Bush Library Web address, told Sing Song to start singing a new song and helped Student Senate pass legislation to put in a new crosswalk.
We decided that our new favorite TV show is “The Paper,” remembered those lost at Virginia Tech on its one-year anniversary and told Harvard how to make everyone happy.
Not everything was silly, sweet or sentimental; we did make endorsements for the presidential primary race in Texas, and for the student body office candidates.
Ed Board advised students to take it easy on Spring Break, and then when they didn’t, applauded Dr. Lori White for not taking it easy on those truculent Mustangs.
We wondered how a man could be arrested for a DUI not only once, not twice but 19 times, and if Congress would ever actually get anything done when it comes to Roger Clemens.
Ed Board gave you some ideas for how to fill your Sundays after football season ended, and gave our picks for the Super Bowl of entertainment, the Academy Awards.
And we said it before, and we’ll keep saying it, JuicyCampus is probably the worst thing we had to talk about all year. This scandal-mongering forum is the most un-classy thing to come out of SMU since the Death Penalty.
It certainly has been an interesting semester. SMU, its administration and the world certainly gave us a lot to talk and laugh about – and almost got us kicked out of our meeting room by an SMU “administrator.”
Congratulations to the class of 2008! Have a great summer, SMU!
