For SMU students and their families, this coming weekend is jam-packed with ‘spooktacular’ events. Festivities for the “Haunted on the Hilltop” themed Family Weekend begin Friday morning and continue throughout the weekend.
SMU Student Foundation has partnered with other university groups to plan 14 campus-wide events to make your parents proud while keeping your siblings amused. Chances are you won’t make all 14 … so here’s the lowdown on our five favorites:
1. Start your weekend right. The Family Luncheon is scheduled to take place on Friday from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will feature SMU student speakers. For $20, you can feed and inform your family at the same time.
2. Prove to your parents that while you are having a blast in college, you are working just as hard as you play. On Friday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., take your family to Meet The Faculty. Faculty members from The Cox School of Business, Meadows School of the Arts, Dedman College, Simmons School of Education and Lyle School of Engineering will each host information sessions where they will address majors and school specific curriculum and programs.
3. With so many noteworthy restaurants in Dallas, choosing just a few to take your family to can be difficult. Why not taste test four cuisines at once? The Taste of Dallas Dinner will feature appetizers from Blue Mesa Grill, main courses from DIVE Coastal Cuisine and Sissy’s Southern Kitchen, and dessert from Emporium Pies. The dinner will take place on Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and tickets cost just $30.
4. Follow up your dinner with an evening of entertainment. From 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, the Family Weekend Talent Show will showcase acts and performances from SMU students, groups and organizations. The musical talents, singing, dancing and more will have you and your family on the edge of your seats. With presale tickets available for $10 and door-side tickets being sold at $15, this fun-filled event deserves a round of applause.
5. Down, set, hike! By now your family has heard you mention the phrase “Boulevarding” many times. Now is your chance to show them how it’s done at Saturday’s Boulevard BBQ and Game. The BBQ starts at 12:30 p.m. followed by the 1 p.m. tailgate and 3 p.m. game versus Tulsa. In honor of Halloween, students and their families are encouraged to sport costumes as well. So throw on your witch hat and cat ears, and join us on the “BOO-levard.”
Registration for some of the events is now closed, but limited tickets will be available at the registration desk in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center on Friday.
