Rolling through Dallas next week is Against the Current, a pop rock band from Poughkeepsie, NY. The band’s members took a few moments to sit down and speak with SMU Campus Weekly to give some insight into what has made them the band they are today.

SMU Campus Weekly: What inspired you to become musicians?

Against the Current: “It’s always been with us. We feel like it’s who we are and what we do. It never really felt like there was a precise moment that we decided to become musicians, it’s just what we’ve always wanted.”

SMU CW: Where’s your favorite place to perform?

ATC: “New York, London and Tokyo are always some of the best shows, but we love every night that we get to play.”

SMU CW: What are some tips to aspiring artists?

ATC: “Be genuine. If you’re trying to emulate another artist or band, you’re trying to be something that already exists, when you should be trying to bring something new to the table.”

SMU CW: What’s life been like since choosing to be professional musicians?

ATC: “It feels really natural. We’ve been working like crazy, but we’re doing what we love.”

SMU CW: When did you start playing?

ATC: “We formed in 2011.”

SMU CW: What was the first song you learned?

ATC: “As a band, we did a Taylor Swift cover of ‘Love Story.'”

SMU CW: Who are some of your inspirations?

ATC: “We draw inspiration from all over the place, it would be hard to narrow it down.”

SMU CW: What are some of your best memories of the road?

ATC: “Getting to play an arena in Japan, or shooting off confetti at our London headliner!”

SMU CW: How do you balance music with other obligations in your life?

ATC: “Music is our life, our job and our career, so it pretty much is all of our obligations!”

SMU CW: Do you ever get nervous before a performance?

ATC: “Typically, no! Performing comes naturally to us.”
