Electronic duo Hermitude energized fans at Dallas’ Lizard Lounge with the sounds off its newest album: Dark Night Sweet Light on Saturday, Nov. 7. The pair’s growing American fan base received just what they expected from the performance this weekend: the soft, temperate lyrics mashed together with up-tempo, party starting beats.

Originally from Blue Mountains, Australia, the two men released their first record Imaginary Friends in 2002. They are very popular among EDM fans in their homeland, but have recently gained fame and recognition in the states with their 2015 album release. In fact, they even made appearances in major U.S. music festivals this year, such as Governor’s Ball in New York, Buku in New Orleans, and SXSW in Austin.

Although the two men are known for their electronic tracks, they are more than just DJs. Both Luke Dubber (“Dubs”) and Angus Short (“Elgusto”) are multi-instrumentalists, and they showcase their musical talents throughout their performances by creating unique sounds with drum machines and turntables.

My favorite part of the show was the debut of their newest single, “Eyes Closed,” for it truly showcases their “electronic soul” style that sets them apart from all the rest; laid back beats accompanying soulful, soft melodies.

Dark Night Sweet Light is the perfect name for the tracks on the new record, in that the moody, meaningful lyrics create the “dark night” feeling while the up tempo, head bumping beats create the contrasting “sweet light” feels.

Other high points of the show included popular tracks such as “Shift” and “The Buzz,” but the crowd favorite appeared to be “Through the Roof,” which is featured on the sound track of the popular video game Madden.

The duo will continue their U.S. leg of the tour through November in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Philadelphia before going to Europe. Check out their newest hit “Eyes Closed” on Spotify.
