Dallas County health officials have confirmed that the first case of the Zika virus has been reported in Dallas County. The case was acquired through sexual transmission.
The patient has reported that they had sexual contact with another infected individual who recently visited a country where the Zika virus is present, according to the Dallas County Health and Human Services.
The Zika virus can be transmitted through mosquitos and sexual activity. The World Health Organization estimates that there could be 4 million cases of Zika virus in the Americas in 2016.
There are no reports of the virus being transmitted by mosquitos in Dallas County, but officials say it could eventually happen when the weather gets warmer and mosquitos’ range increases.
