Women’s golf off to Lubbock

The SMU women’s golf team heads to Lubbock to compete in the Jeannie McHaney Invitational on Monday. The Mustangs were ranked No. 20 in the Sept. 9 issue by Golfweek magazine. Junior Lacey Jones and senior Jennifer Ackerson, who are both expected to lead SMU this season, were ranked 84th and 121st by Golfweek. This ranking is the highest ranking the women’s golf team has had since 1992 when the Mustangs finished 15th in the NCAA tournament.

In Lubbock the Mustangs will face host Texas Tech, Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida International, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Redlands CC, Sam Houston State, San Francisco, TCU, UTEP, UT-San Antonio and Western Michigan. This is the first tournament of the season for the Mustangs; they’ll have to play the season opener without top player senior Laura Cross, who is still suffering from an injury. The women head to Ann Arbor, Mich. at the end of September to participate in the Wolverine Invitational.
