A small fire broke out in Fondren Science Building before 3 p.m. today, causing more than 60 students and faculty to evacuate during afternoon classes.

According to an emergency services personal, a trashcan fire was the case of the alarm. The Fondren Science Building, Heroy Hall and the Dedman Life Sciences Building were all evacuated. Daniel Avenue was also briefly shut down while firetrucks arrived on scene.

Junior Anna Landreneau said she was in class watching a movie for a lab when the alarm went off around 2:40 p.m.

“Everyone packed up and left — it wasn’t chaotic or anything in the halls,” she said. “When I got outside I saw a police car pull up and an officer go in the building.”

At 2:55 p.m., emergency officers announced to the crowd of students that “it might take a while” an that Fondren Science was on fire.

However, the issue was quickly taken care of and students were allowed back into the building at 3 p.m. as the Fondren Bell Tower chimed.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
