Mustangs are coming together to save lives this Wednesday. SMU will host ‘Good Deeds Day’ April 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hughes-Triggs Commons.

This event is especially close to SMU. Mustang alumnus Jesse Bernard, an Iraq War Marine Veteran, graduated from the university with his MBA. His 7-year-old daughter, Hallie, is searching for a bone marrow match. They are hoping to find one through the event Wednesday.

Delete Blood Cancer has partnered with SMU to bring this event to campus. The organization is dedicated to saving lives by finding bone marrow and blood stem cell matches to those suffering from blood cancer or blood disorders.

SMU students can be tested Wednesday to see if they could be a potential donor. Registering only takes a matter of minutes; it includes filling out a form and having the inside of your cheeks swabbed. If you are a match, a representative from Delete Blood Cancer will contact you for further steps to determine if you are the best possible donor. The process is free of charge.

This is the third annual Good Deed’s Day hosted by SMU. Last year, Good Deed’s Day brought in around 100 volunteers.

“We are hoping for at least 100 participants this year too,” Biko McMillan, SMU junior, said.
