The men’s tennis team defeated Oral Roberts University Sunday by a score of 6-1.
The Mustangs were originally scheduled to play a double-header including matches against Lamar University. Poor weather conditions and damp courts forced Lamar to reschedule and the matches against ORU started two hours late.
Eric Cohn played second singles for the Ponies and said he felt the weather was a factor.
“One minute you think you are playing and the next minute you’re not,” Cohn said. “That makes it hard to get ready to play a match.”
The Mustangs had an opportunity to rest their top singles players and move other players up in the rotation to play more difficult matches.
Head coach Carl Neufeld was pleased with the team’s performance.
“It is nice to give other guys on the team an opportunity to gain experience against better players,” Neufeld said. “It becomes a big confidence boost when players can play against more competitive competition.”
The Mustangs won five of the six singles matches and both of the doubles matches, recording six of the possible seven points.
The men’s team will be back in action at Haggar Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
The Ponies will play UL-Lafayette at 10 a.m. followed by matches against Centenary at 2 p.m.
