On July 5 SMU Police Chief Richard Shafer announced an SMU Police Officer Mark McCullers has gone missing while working off-duty at a construction site.

In the email, the Highland Park Department of Public Safety reported McCullers was “working as a private security guard at a construction site when he and his car were swept away by high water” near Turtle Creek in Highland Park.

McCullers had called 911 around 1:30 a.m. reporting floodwaters were beginning to move his car, according to WFAA.

Rescue groups continue to search a two-mile radius in Turtle Creek, starting from where he disappeared to the Trinity River. WFAA stated search groups have been using sonar technology and cadaver dogs to try to locate his body.

The Dallas Fire-Rescue and SMU Police Department are currently working together for this search and rescue effort.

Chief Shafer thanked neighboring police and fire departments and rescue crews for their efforts. He said in a email: “our prayers and thoughts are with the officer’s family members and other loved ones as the search continues.”

Two days after the search was announced, SMU released a statement from a family member of McCullers and an update from Chief Shafer.

Sister-in-law Ben Nix remains hopeful that McCullers will be rescued, but provided a description for the public on “one of the most devoted men we know,” stating he was “devoted to his country as he served for nine years as a Marine,” “devoted to training proper gun control and combat techniques for the protection and service of others,””devoted to the law serving the last two years on the SMU police force” and “devoted in his faith in God and to his family.”

Chief Shafer added since the family decided to go public, it is “appropriate to share that Officer McCullers has served since February 2015 as a member of the SMU Police Department Patrol Division.”

He also said SMU officers will continue to offer assistance to Dallas Fire-Rescue and the Highland Park DPS as the search continues.
