Spring practices bring lineup changes

The end of the left a hole in the depth chart of SMU’s football team.

Tuesday, the Mustang football team started its first day of spring workouts. The workout was a wake-up call for the players who say the day was tough after a long holiday hiatus. Along with a new semester, many players have new positions.

The change not only filled some spots in the depth chart, but it also will bring about competition at every position.

“The change was cool, I just want to play, and since I did play cornerback in high school, I think I will be able to help the team,” said running back turned cornerback Anthony Barnett.

“Anything to help us win,” Johnnie Fitzgerald said, who will switch from safety to running back. “I played scout team running back all fall, and I know I can help the team win.”

Spring practices present a different challenge for the players.

“I thought today was pretty rough,” said junior cornerback, Jonas Rutledge. “It was hard because this portion of the season is the furthest from out actual season.”

“I was a little nervous about practice, because the off season is always harder than the season,” Fitzgerald said. “But when we got out there it was the same rigorous routine from the fall.”

Player Position Changes

  • Anthony Barnett – Running back to cornerback
  • Derek Swofford – Defensive end to tight end
  • Wesley Medlock – Cornerback to wide receiver
  • Johnnie Fitzgerald – Strong safety to running back
  • Ruben Moodley – Free safety to cornerback
