At the outset of the season, the SMU football team set a goal. Their goal was to play in a bowl game. While the team finished the season out of bowl contention, one player made it to one of the most prestigious bowl games in college football.

Senior cornerback Kevin Garrett represented the Mustangs in the 2002 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Garrett got four tackles for the South squad. The North won the game, 17-0 despite the South boasting some of the most heralded athletes in the nation.

South quarterbacks were Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer of Southern California, Chris Simms from the University of Texas and Kliff Kingsbury, who Garrett faced early in the Mustangs’ season.

Houston Texans head coach Dom Capers and his staff coached the South. The staff described Garrett as a nickel back with great speed and quickness.

The NFL Draft will be held April 26-27. Garrett is one of 17 graduating football players.
