For the first time since 1987, SMU finished last in the 21st annual Dallas Morning News Classic on Friday and Saturday night.

No. 8 California defended its crown from last season by upsetting No. 6 Florida. Cal’s 352 points was the most ever scored in the event. SMU finished with 234.

SMU senior Brice Dumais finished second in the three-meter diving competition with a score of 350.7. Dumais’ finish qualified him for the NCAA National Competition in the event. His second-place finish was the highest that any Mustang finished in an event.

The men’s swim team (3-1) had a tough weekend, losing to Florida 128-104 the night before. Dumais placed first in three-meter diving and SMU’s Jonathon Newton placed first with a 20.63 time in the 50 free. Florida responded by winning the next three events. Newton ended the streak with a first place finish in the 100 free style with a time of 45.18. Up next for SMU is a dual meet against TCU at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23 at Perkins Natatorium.
