Equestrian team loses to aggies at championships

It was déjà vu for the SMU Equestrian team at Varsity National Championships on Thursday as the No. 12 seeded Mustangs fell 6-2 to No. 5 seed Texas A&M. In 2006, No. 11 seeded SMU lost in the first round to the No. 6 seeded Aggies.

This year, the championships were held in Waco, Texas, at the Dodge Show Pavilion.

Lauren O’Neil garnered SMU’s only win in the Equitation on the Flat portion of the competition. The senior won her match-up against A&M’s Viviana Cordero 129-109. After the flat competition, the Mustangs began the fences portion down 3-1. SMU Freshman Kathryn Garvie took the team’s only win at Equitation over Fences with a match score of 142-141. In points, SMU lost to A&M 1108 to 972.5.

The championships mark the end of the Equestrian team’s season, but the roster won’t look much different in 2008. The Mustangs will graduate only one senior, O’Neil, and retain the rest of the squad.
