The No. 61 SMU men’s tennis team embarks on its last regular-season road trip this weekend to meet conference opponent No. 27 Rice in Houston. The Mustangs are 14-8 for the season and 0-1 against C-USA opponents.
The Owls boast two Top 100 players, senior Ben Harknett (No. 28) and junior Ralph Knupher (No. 95), and an overall record of 13-8. Rice is 0-1 against other C-USA teams after suffering a loss to Tulsa. Last season, the Mustangs powered past Rice 4-3 late in the year.
The Owls are coming off a 5-1 victory over Abilene Christian, but the Mustangs are on a seven-match win streak after defeating the UTA Mavericks 5-2 on Wednesday.
No. 72 Alex Skrypko continues to lead SMU at both No. 1 singles and doubles. He and partner Federico Murgier combine for a 9-5 record at No. 1.
Oivind Alver and Robin Faghen hold SMU’s strongest doubles record. The duo is 7-2 at the No. 2 spot. Faghen, a freshman, holds one of the squad’s best singles records at 13-5. His partner, Alver, is 4-1 at the No. 3 spot and 7-8 overall.
At No. 2 singles is David Kuczer. The junior is 10-8 in dual matches and has won eight of his last 10 matches.
This is SMU’s second-to-last match before the end of the regular season. After playing the Owls, the Mustangs return to Dallas to take on Florida Atlantic on Tuesday, April 17 at the Bent Tree Country Club. The Mustangs begin post-season play at the C-USA Conference Championships in Houston on April 20.
