The end of the regular season is in sight for the No. 48 SMU women’s tennis team. The Mustangs play host to the University of Texas-El Paso Sat., April 14, at the Garland Tennis Center. The SMU squad will highlight its two seniors, Jennifer Chay and Georgiana Marta, at the match. Following the match against UTEP, SMU heads to Tulsa, Okla., for the C-USA Conference Championships April 19-22.
The Mustangs won their 10th straight match on Wednesday in a 7-0 win over the Mean Green from UNT. The victory advanced them to 18-4 for the season. UTEP is a conference opponent and will be the fourth that SMU has met this year. The Mustangs are currently 2-1 in C-USA play.
The Miners are on a five-match winning streak heading into their meeting with SMU. UTEP holds an 11-7 overall and a 3-0 conference record this season. UTEP met conference opponents Southern Mississippi, Memphis and Houston earlier in the year. Before taking on the Mustangs on Saturday, UTEP faces UNT Friday in Denton.
SMU earned wins at every position on Wednesday and their ninth shutout of the season. Junior Natalia Bubien won her third consecutive match at No. 1 singles, improving her overall dual match record to 10-7. Her doubles partner, Claire Reitsch, continues to claim the best singles record on the squad at 18-2. The freshman also shares a 16-3 record at No. 1 doubles with Bubien.
Seniors Chay and Marta will be the focus of SMU’s Senior Day. Chay, who typically plays No. 2 singles and doubles, is 13-6 in singles for the season. Marta’s best record is 6-4 at No. 4. She is currently on a two-match win streak.
Pavi Francis, another freshman, holds an 18-4 singles record, playing most of her matches at No. 4. She and Chay pair up at No. 2 doubles, having won six of their last 10 matches.
For the Miners, both Samantha Attard and Marina Deluca have contributed to the team’s recent success. Attard, a sophomore, plays predominantly at No. 6 singles. Deluca defends the No. 3 singles spot and pairs with Isabela Kulaif in doubles.
The Mustangs end their season with a conference contest before preparing for the C-USA Championships next week.
