Relay For Life was moved off The Boulevard on Friday due to inclement weather complications – but it only got more complicated after that.
Organizers frenetically tried to locate a place to host the biggest fundraiser held on campus, but ran into problems. University officials denied a request to hold the walk inside the old Mrs. Bairds factory located across from SMU on Mockingbird Lane.
The event wound up in the Biggers Gym of Highland Park United Methodist Church.
Event organizers for the SMU Relay did not return calls Monday night for comment.
The fundraiser lasted from 6-9:30 p.m. Usually the relay lasts for a full 12 hours, but the American Cancer Society cut it short this year because it was worried about participants arriving home safely after North Texas was hit with thunderstorms.
Before the event began $92,000 had already been raised and by the end of the night SMU raised $120,000 according to the Panhellenic Press News Letter.
Last year, Relay For Life raised nearly $130,000.
“It was nice to see the campus united in something for the better good,” said Rachel Carey, a first-year member of Alpha Chi Omega.
The Alpha Chis entered two teams totaling 21 women.
Any team that entered had raise $100 per member to walk.
Approximately 300 people participated said Katye Dunn, a sophomore at SMU.
During Relay for Life, one member of each team must be up and walking the entire time.
A total of 74 teams participated in this year’s fundraiser.
