The No. 56 SMU women’s tennis team improved its record to 17-4 on Saturday with a 6-0 sweep of Santa Clara University. The Mustangs won their ninth consecutive match without doubles play due to impending inclement weather. The Broncos’ loss only lengthened their losing streak to six matches, making them 5-10 overall for the season.
SMU took six singles wins, all won in two sets. The Mustangs dropped a total of 13 games en route to a win over the Broncos.
Junior Natalia Bubien took her ninth victory at the No. 1 singles position over Casey Knuston. The 6-0, 6-4 win was Bubien’s 15th overall this season.
At No. 2, senior Jennifer Chay improved her dual match record to 12-6. Chay held serve throughout her 6-0, 6-3 win over Kim Daniel.
Santa Clara’s Stephanie Galainena was no match for SMU freshman Claire Reitsch at No. 3. Reitsch finished the match 6-0, 6-1 and advanced her singles record to 18-2 in dual matches for the season.
Fellow Mustang Pavi Francis also kept her Santa Clara opponent Lindsay McBride to a 6-0, 6-1 score. Francis earned her 17th dual match singles victory and her 12th victory at the No. 4 spot.
At No. 5 and No. 6, Kristen Reid and Georgiana Marta defeated Erika Barnes (6-0, 6-3) and Meghan Madden (6-1, 6-0) to complete the 6-0 sweep of Santa Clara.
The Mustangs’ victory over the Broncos ended SMU’s five-match home stand. The team takes a short road trip to face the University of North Texas on April 11. Following the match-up with the Mean Green, the Mustangs return to Dallas for their final dual match of the season against the University of Texas-El Paso.
