Originally a lighthearted plot point on season two of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” Galentine’s Day has become an official celebration of friendships for many women.
In the episode, Amy Pohler’s Leslie Knope turns to the camera to explain her holiday.
“It’s only the best day of the year,” Knope says. “Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and boyfriends at home and just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebratin’ ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst — plus, frittatas.”
In honor of the sacred holiday, sit down with your gal pals and rewatch some of the purest friendships on screen.
Lucy and Ethel (“I Love Lucy”)
The original BFF duo, Lucy and Ethel will forever be our friendship goals. The partners-in-crime were always scheming, plotting, or getting caught up in each other’s shenanigans. Everyone needs that friend who’ll convince you to do the crazy thing you might regret later.
Rory and Paris (“Gilmore Girls”)
Come as enemies, leave as friends. While “Gilmore Girls” is full of Bechdel Test-defying friendships, Rory and Paris’ friendship has some of the most endearing and powerful growth throughout the series. Paris’ fierce loyalty and Rory’s patience and understanding allow each other to be the best versions of themselves.
Abbi and Ilana (“Broad City”)
True “fronds to the ond” Abbi and Ilana are always there for each other, never hesitating to be the other one’s appointed “hype man.” They know every gross detail about each other but never try to squash each other’s imperfections down. Instead, they accept each other for who they are, cheering on weird antics with never-ending ‘yas queens.’
Jess and Cece (“New Girl”)
Just as every goofball needs a bit of perspective, every level-headed person needs a goofball in their life. Cece and Jess are each other’s complement, always willing to be the other’s “mom friend” if need be. Together, they are a hilariously unstoppable force.
Poussey and Taystee (“Orange is the New Black”)
Sometimes, friendships of circumstance can turn out to be the most rewarding relationships. While Poussey and Taystee only met at Litchfield Correctional Facility, their inseparable bond shows us that friendship can be more important than any romantic relationship.
Ann and Leslie (“Parks and Recreation”)
Every girl needs a friend who calls them a “rainbow-infused space unicorn” regularly. Leslie and Ann have one of the most supportive and cherished friendships in the past decade. They rarely fight, never tear each other down, and will always have each other’s backs. Anyone would be lucky to have a friend with Leslie’s loyalty or Ann’s generosity.
