There’s less than 30 days left in the semester, and if you haven’t made up your mind about what you’re going to do for the summer, then stop procrastinating! Get a job, get an internship, and if you’re an out-of-towner, visit your parents – or maybe not . . .
Summer vacation is a time of year that some people take for granted. Once you’re in the real world, that trip to Cancun will have to wait until you’re eligible for vacation days. Carpe diem Mustangs, the university has a world of opportunities.
You could pay a visit to the international office and check out study abroad programs. Although it’s a too late now, you’ll be informed for next time. For example, there are communications programs in London and foreign language programs in France, China and Germany.
Summer internships are still an option, even this late in the semester. Just last week the English department circulated an email to their mailing list about a paid internship doing creative copywriting. Internship listings can be obtained through your academic adviser and on the MustangTrak Web site.
Another good way to find internships is to simply ask the business that you are interested in working for. Some businesses don’t openly advertise their internship positions, but if you contact human resources they are usually willing to help.
Aside from taking tropical vacations or going home to the parents, a lot of students have opted to get jobs this summer.
Ivory Welcome, a first-year from Cedar Hill, Texas, plans to get an office job helping her sister doing military sales and services.
Sophomore history major Zach Urquhart chose a job that would let him have some fun.
“[I plan to] work at a summer camp for kids. I am going to be able to give back to the community that has given me so much. Also, it will be nice to be outdoors and active all summer,” he said.
If you don’t have a definite plan just yet, you’re not alone. Some students just chose to go with the flow and see what comes their way.
“I’m unsure. If I don’t go to summer school then I’ll get a job. But I don’t want to go home. I’ll probably visit relatives in Chicago and Houston,” Mustang volleyball player Kollin Hoskins said.
