Students and other members of the Dallas community gathered in the McFarlin Auditorium as bands Phantom Planet and Motion City Soundtrack played during the annual Code Red Concert on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
“We tried to mix it up this year,” said Jordan McCarter, the advisor to SMU’s Program Council. “We wanted it to be upbeat and music that everyone would enjoy.”
The concert was planned by Program Council. PC is a student-run organization that provides educational, cultural, recreational and entertainment programming for the SMU community.
Tickets were $5 for students and $10 for the general public. This is the second year that the Program Council has held the Code Red Concert and it plans to continue the spring event for years to come.
The audience cheered and sang along as Phantom Planet opened the concert and performed their track “California,” the theme song from the popular Fox TV series, The O.C. Phantom Planet is an alternative rock band based out of Southern California. The band recorded its self-titled album in 2003 and has just come off an 18-month tour.
“I came to see Phantom Planet,” said sophomore Emily Curtis. “I love ‘The O.C.’ and have been a Phantom Planet fan since I first heard ‘California’ on the show.”
Motion City Soundtrack, the feature band at the Code Red Concert, is a pop punk band from Minneapolis, Minn. The band played several songs, including “Everything Is Alright” and “Together We’ll Ring In The New Year.”
Open to the public as well as all SMU students, the concert was attended by a few hundred people, not fully meeting the SMU Program Council’s expectations.
“It was a good turnout, but it did hurt us a little. I think it was because of the sketchy weather and other SMU events going on at the same time,” McCarter said.
Program Council is planning another concert to take place during Mustang Stampede in the fall.
