SMU track and field athlete Gaelle Niare earned her first C-USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week award of the outdoor season, the league announced Tuesday. The senior from Montrveil, France, was also named C-USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week during the indoor season in February.
The honor follows Niare’s participation at the TCU Invitational last week. The Mustang notched NCAA-qualifying, first-place performances in both the high jump (1.80 meters) and long jump (6.12 meters).
She also placed fourth in the javelin toss (34.02) and tenth in the shot put (13.40 meters). In track events, Niare ran the 800-meter in a time of 2:29.47. Overall, Niare posted four season best records and now leads the SMU squad in the high jump, long jump and shot put for the outdoor season.
The Mustang track and field athletes return to competition April 27-28 when they participate in the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Over 70 schools will send more than 8,000 athletes to compete in what organizers have dubbed “America’s Athletic Classic.”
Following the Drake Relays, SMU heads to Houston to compete in the C-USA Track and Field Championships May 9-11.
