Senior midfielder Diego Walsh from Miami, Fla. has been selected by College Soccer News.com as the national player of the week, ending Oct. 27. He recorded his second hat trick of the season with three goals versus Tulsa in SMU’s 5-1 win over the Golden Hurricanes on Oct. 26 at SMU.
This is his third hat trick of his soccer career here at SMU. Walsh leads the Mustangs in scoring with 14 goals and five assists. He collected his first hat trick of the season against TCU on Sept. 20.
Diego has 14 goals this season, which is a career high for him. He still needs two assists to become SMU’s all-time career assist leader.
“The Mustangs have not been getting the press that they received the last two years but they have been getting the wins and do have a high national ranking,” College Soccer News.com said.
The Mustangs are 13-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play, with their lone tie on the road against Bradley. Having a high national ranking, SMU’s men’s soccer team is ranked fifth.
They will play away this weekend facing a very good Drake squad that is 5-1-1 in conference play and also a very good Creighton team that is 6-0-1 in conference play. SMU will play both games away. These two conference road games will wrap up the Mustangs’ regular season.
The first game is Friday, at 7 p.m. against Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. The second game is on Sunday, at 1 p.m. against Creighton in Omaha, Neb.
