The four members of Dallas native jam olospo donned Star Wars get ups and many audience members wore festive garments as well at the band’s first Halloween gig.
Last week was a great one for music in Dallas with Gov’t Mule playing Tuesday, Galactic on Wednesday and olospo finishing things up on Thursday.
The venue was cozy and not overly-packed. olospo played until last call and had everyone’s attention.
It was a really laid back scene and the band was taking requests. Among the originals, familiar to most of the crowd, there were plenty of sweet covers.
The band opened with a Phish tune, “Run Like an Antelope,” that proved to be a crowd favorite.
The rest of the first set included mostly originals like “Choking on Pills,” but the guys threw in a humorous ’80s cover for good measure. Everyone knew the song, but didn’t know how they knew it.
Between sets, the upstairs patio offered a breath of fresh air and a chance to mingle with band members. Fans mulled over the previous night’s Galactic show at the Gypsy Tea Room and the general concensus was good stuff.
Probably the best jam of the night included a cover of the Big Wu’s “Silcanturnitova,” the theme from Super Mario Brothers (an olospo specialty), another Phish tune, “Weekapaug Groove,” and then a “Werewolves of London” cover – perfect for Halloween.
Chants of the familiar chorus as well as group howls permeated the smoke-thickened air.
Along with a nicely done version of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” a space-laced Beck redo rounded out the band’s covers for the night and added to the dynamic set list.
A special treat came when keyboardist Britt Morris traded places with guitarist Chris Holt for a couple tunes – something that only happens once every 20 shows or so.
The night was a lot of fun and anyone who hasn’t seen this band live should make a point to get on the bandwagon.
The Red Blood Club is a down home kind of place, really chill. This Friday you can catch performances by local bands Lowpoly, Loop 13 and KHOSS.
Saturday, The Landing Pad will take the stage featuring Souldoubt and Robert Taylor.
