Mustangs win soccer tournament

Cruz nails game winners in Golden Hurricane tourney

Mustang hero and tournament MVP, Leone Cruz, has made a name for himself at SMU. He won the first game of the tournament for the Mustangs in the 99th minute of the game to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Cruz was able to do it again against the University of Wisconsin. Cruz was able to score late in the game in the 84th minute.

Cruz, a freshman from Round Rock, was listed as one of the top-100 freshman in the nation, and has proved it so far in the young season. Cruz was also honored in being named co-offensive player of the week for Conference USA.

The defense held strong for the Mustangs by out-shooting their opponents 20 to 9, and 21 to 3. Goalkeeper Matt Wideman wasn’t tested often, but when he was, Wideman was up to the task. The senior keeper from Fairview stopped four shots on goal in the overtime win against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and just one against Wisconsin.

The Mustangs look to keep it up this weekend when SMU hosts the Radisson Invitational to be held at the University of Texas-Dallas.
