Women’s soccer to play Bearkats

After a difficult loss to North Carolina during their opening weekend, the SMU women’s soccer team returns to the field today to take on Sam Houston State University. The Mustangs will play the Bearkats at the Prichett Field Complex in Huntsville at 6 p.m.

Sam Houston State is home to the three players most recently named as Southland Conference players of the week: offensive: Yoanna Garcia, Defensive: Carla Campbell and Goalkeeper: Melissa Sauceda. The honors were announced after the Bearkats had a strong opening weekend, beating Mississippi State 1-0 in overtime and playing well against Centenary, despite losing 2-3. SMU’s own all-conference players, Kimber Bailey, Carley Phillips and Ashley Gunter, will have to step up their game today.

SMU did not face Sam Houston State during the 2005-2006 season. In 2004, however, the Mustangs beat the Bearkats 7-2 early in the season. The SMU women’s soccer team is hoping for another win against Sam Houston in order to raise their season record to 2-1.

SMU will take on the University of North Texas in Denton on September 3, at 1 p.m.
