Anthony Everett, a student in the Perkins School of Theology, has won an award from the March of Dimes for his work with Project Alpha in conjunction with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Everett, who was given the Alumni Brother of the Year Award has been working with the North Dallas chapter of his fraternity to produce the project, described as a “Male-focused Teen Pregnancy Conference” in a press release from the fraternity. Everett won the award at the Centennial Celebration Black and Gold Banquet in Washington, D.C.
The project is aimed at educating boys 12-15 about responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Leaders of the fraternity hold workshops and information sessions with local health experts. Everett is an assistant pastor for youth at Highland Hills United Methodist Church. The award came in part from a video presentation of the project made at Everett’s church that video aired on Dallas Community Television. According to the press release, nearly 99 percent of the 12-17 year-olds at the Henry Wade Juvenile Detention Center in Dallas (one of Project Alpha’s target audiences) have some form of an STD.
