The College Hispanic American Students hosted a reggaeton music showcase on Wednesday in conjunction with Urban Box Office. Five artists performed music from the CD/DVD “Chosen Few: El Documental” as part of their nationwide tour promoting reggaeton history.
Manuel Alejandro “Boy Wonder” Ruiz, executive producer of the discs, said that reggaeton is “a rural Latin explosion … it’s a new fusion, a new discovery of music.”
The fusion consists of reggae, hip-hop, rap and Spanish lyrics, according to mundoreggaeton.com.
Divino, Tres Coronas, Getto, LDA and Plan B performed and signed autographs. Students participated in a dance competition, including sophomore biology major Pamela Zevallos. As treasurer of CHAS, she believes events such as this are necessary.
“They bring more diversity to SMU.,” she said. “They allow others to experience some new music.”
Sophomore Matt Shaw had never heard of reggaeton but enjoyed it. “It was good.,” he said. “Different.”
Next, the El Documental tour heads off to Austin and Houston.
