Senate stingy in second session

With more than half of the Summer Senate Committee absent from it second meeting, the remaining members met on June 17 to discuss eight funding requests, but none of the groups requesting money got everything they asked for.

The largest requests came from New Student Programs, who were looking for more than $17,000 for various orientation and beginning of the school year activities.

Three of the four requests were considered in block, and NSP was eventually funded $9,572: $500 was allotted for the Red and Blue dinner, an event held as part of transfer and non-traditional student orientation, $4,404 was allotted for Week of Welcome publicity literature and to pay for travel expenses for the WOW trip to Six Flags, $2,844 was given to NSP for advertising for Mustang Stampede, as well as partial funding for the event itself. The Senate also funded $1,824 to help defray the cost of Mustang Corral leaders lodging during the event.

The Chaplain’s Office asked for $1000 to fund a barbeque during WOW. It was funded $900, but not $100 for sound equipment.

The Office of Leadership and Community Involvement requested $2,844 to purchase tents. The immediate use of the tents will be for the volunteer fair. The event brings in agencies to drum up support from the student body. The request was amended to give the LCI $2,374.

Other groups were less successful in obtaining funds from Senate.

The Environmental Committee requested $500 to purchase posters to advertise the new single-stream recycling program the Committee has been implementing. Committee Chair Christine Dougherty said the request was a low priority and that it already had posters for this program, but the committee thought a new design would be more effective. After a short debate, Senate Secretary Brooks Powell moved to fund the group $0.

The Student Activities Center was also turned down for funds. Newly appointed Director Jennifer Jones said the vans that student groups used needed to be cleaned on a monthly basis. The vans are used for community service, and sports trips, among others. When the request came to debate, Sen. Jonathan Lane, who authored the request, suggested the bill be deferred until the next Senate meeting. The group decided to have the request considered in the fall term, so the bill was killed and will brought before the full senate when school is in session.

The Senate will meet again on July 15 at 1 p.m.
