SMU Student wins national prize

You wouldn’t know it from looking at them, but Dallas Mayor Laura Miller, Martha Stewart and SMU student Liz Healy all have something in common – they’ve all won a place as one of Glamour magazine’s Top 10 College Women. The former student body president, who currently serves as the student member on the Board of Trustees, beat out hundreds of applicants to snag a spot in the unranked top-10 list that’s featured in October’s issue. Glamour article editor Erin Zammett Ruddy said that coming up with content for the spread wasn’t the hardest part of her job – it’s fitting it all in. “The most challenging thing was how hard it was to take these impressive binders full of all the things Liz and all the other girls are doing and have it all come across in 100 words or less,” she said. The winners of the contest had to go through a selection process with several different stages.Healy said she sent in an application in February that included recommendations, a resume, news clips and a television segment. She said she found out she’d made it to the semi-finals in March and then had a phone interview with an editor at Glamour. At the end of May she got a phone call notifying her that she’d won.Healy and the other winners flew to New York City in June for a photo shoot at Columbia University. Last weekend, the magazine unveiled the spread at a luncheon awards ceremony. According to Ruddy, being a good student wasn’t enough to win the competition.”It’s so much more than just being good in the classroom; it’s about having the leadership experience,” she said, and about “going above and beyond being a regular college student and also having some unique goals.””Liz, of course, was perfect for that.” Healy said that the weekend had speakers at every meal, but that Eve Ensler’s (the author of “The Vagina Monologues”) speech at the luncheon was top-notch.”It was an incredibly powerful speech about taking risks and making a difference,” she said. “It was really moving.”Healy also found herself sitting next to the CEO of the American Red Cross during the ceremonies. “At the awards luncheon, they surprised each girl with a leader in her respective field,” she explained. Gabe Travers, who has worked with Healy for three years in the Senate, said that he and Healy have been friends since a chance meeting freshman year.”We met when we were both copying our signs for our [freshman senator] elections at Kinko’s,” he said. “We were staring at each other across the store thinking ‘they’re probably running against me.'”But the two struck up a conversation and have been friends ever since. Travers, a senior journalism major, said he’s enjoyed working with Healy.”She’s very motivated,” he said. “She’s very passionate about her experience at SMU and about leaving the university a better place than she found it.”Ruddy, who met Healy at the June photo shoot, said she sensed Healy’s outgoing personality right away.”She was very outgoing and she seemed very funny and warm,” she said. Ruddy said the girls enjoyed meeting other people, but that the editors enjoy the process, too.”It’s also really inspiring for the editors at Glamour to get to see what people are doing,” she said. “Our future is in very good hands with people like Liz.”Healy expressed similar sentiments.”The entire experience has been incredibly overwhelming and truly amazing,” she said. “The other girls are so inspirational – things they accomplish at such a young age is incredible.”
