No. 3 men’s soccer deserves more attention

Traditionally, after SMU sporting events, players and fans standand sing the alma mater, “Varsity.”

Ed Board observed that after a dominant 6-0 victory Friday nightagainst Evansville, the men’s soccer team made every faithfulMustang fan proud. Instead of simply packing up after the game, members of the team first made it a point to thank their fans withapplause. After this, the team gathered in a circle, Pony ears heldhigh, and sang “Varsity.” In front of ones, if not tensof fans, 28 guys belted out the best rendition of the alma matersince the goalposts came down one month ago.

But this rendition was different.

No band. No cheerleaders. Not even Peruna was around.

Just 28 guys admirably representing their school.

Ed Board would like to thank SMU Soccer for taking pride in thistradition. The men’s soccer team exemplifies the pride andMustang spirit that all members of the SMU community can learnfrom. Even though this team plays at a less-than-attractive venueand doesn’t draw near the local media attention as otherteams [shame on us], this team continues to do things well.Obviously, winning is one of these things. But the other, lessapparent thing is school spirit.

Even though the team sometimes plays second fiddle, they are byno means second-rate. In fact, the team moved up to the No. 3 rankin the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidasnational collegiate soccer poll. The Mustangs sit close behind thesecond-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, and top-ranked, undefeated NorthCarolina-Greensboro Spartans.

Ed Board would like to wish the Mustangs luck in its last tworemaining regular season games. Though both games are on the road,at Bradley and at Eastern Illinois, Ed Board is certain that thisgroup will continue to represent the red and the blue in acommendable way as they continue their quest to bring a NationalChampionship home to the Hilltop.

And don’t worry, Coach Cosaboon, we didn’t forgetabout you. Did we mention that the women’s team is ranked No.20? And, oh yeah, they play at 7 p.m. tonight at Wescott Field.
