The Mustangs came close, but couldn’t quite overcome a 31-7 halftime deficit in Tulane last night. Even outscoring the Green Wave in the second half 20-3, SMU falls to 1-4 losing 34-27.
The Mustangs scored a touchdown to bring them within seven points with two minutes left in the game. But decided to kick the ball off to Tulane rather than try an onside attempt. The Green Wave were able to run out the clock and seal the win.
Wide receivers Emmanuel Sanders and Aldrick Robinson each had over 100 yards for the second time this year. Joining Sanders and Robinson with a touchdown reception was Terrance Wilkerson.
Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell struggled to complete passes again, completing just 21 of 44 passes for 256 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. With 10 minutes left and down 31-20 Mitchell’s first pass of the drive was intercepted by Tulane’s Josh Lumar.
That led to a Tulane field goal and put the game out of reach.
Punter and place kicker Thomas Morstead lead the Mustangs in rushing yards, with a 34-yard carry on a fake punt. Chris Butler carried the ball six times for 16 yards.
The Mustangs will now have two extra days to prepare for their next game against Central Florida on Oct. 4 in Orlando.
