After falling to 14th overall in the first round of play on Monday, the SMU men’s golf team made a dramatic improvement on Tuesday to jump six spots overall on the final day of action.
The Mustangs’ 20 stroke improvement in the Hawks Invitational in North Falmouth, Mass. helped SMU finish eighth overall.
The tournament only spanned two days after rain shortened the 72-hole event down to 36 holes.
Aaron Stewart posted SMU’s top score on the first day by shooting three strokes over par (75). Stewart had a rough second day and shot a 91.
However, the second day was a marked improvement for the rest of the Mustangs.
Mark Sambol, Max Buckley, Kelly Kraft, and James Kwon all bettered their first round scores on Tuesday. Sambol shot a one-under 71, while the rest of the golfers shot even par on the day.
Baylor University came away with the trophy by shooting a 566, which was 10 strokes ahead of second place N.C. State. On top of the overall title, Colton Williams and Bill Allcorn finished second and third for the Bears.
N.C. State’s Matt Hill helped propel the Wolfpack with his tournament best score of 131.
The men’s golf team is back in action Monday, Oct. 13 when it travels to Brimingham, Alab. to compete in the Jerry Pate Invite.
