New music this year has seemed to be more of the same. Over and over, we hear the same whiney voices, the 80s-revival synth tracks, the strong drum beats, things which all tend to tire easily, and understandably so. With the advant of the MP3 technology, bands everywhere seem to realese sloppy records, very few of which are listenable all the way through. Then came Beep Beep. The quartet‘s debut Business Casual, released this summer is shock-full of effortlessly catchy tracks, one as short as 40 seconds long, packed tightly with danceable riffs and vocals that run from calm singing to quasi-screaming. Their sound isn’t hard to describe: if members of The Chinese Stars and Cursive were to create a musical love child, they would call it Beep Beep. Somehow, Beep Beep has succeeded in making a seemingly manic record that is pleasant to listen to. The lyrics are notably bizarre, sometimes even disturbing, such as these from track No. 4, “Giggle Giggle”: “Standing in your bedroom cheering with your pompoms, I’m peeping through the window. You’re dancing to a boom box.” The perversions and thoughts of death (“I’ll have you all to myself until your body turns cold,” from the ultra-short “Chewy Poison.”) are however pushed aside, almost forgotten in the midst of everything else. Beep Beep succeeds in doing what many bands have been trying to do these past few years: create a sound that is familiar but original.
Beep Beep is playing tonight in support of TV on the Radio and The Faint at Fort Worth’s Ridglea Theatre. Tickets are on sale at frontgatetickets.com.
