The SMU Police Department issued a crime alert on Friday for a reported sexual assault at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house.

A female student reported to police last Thursday that she had been at the house with a group of students on Wednesday playing a drinking game.

The student and a male acquaintance went to his room, where she said he assaulted her, according to the report.

SMU PD are investigating the matter.

Police are asking anyone with information to call SMU PD at 214-768-3388 or to report anonymously by calling 214-SMU-2TIP or visiting http://www.smu.edu/2tip.

Police Chief Richard Shafer urged students to report sexual assaults. Shafer said it was “really important to report it right away,” although he realizes that some people want to think about it or talk to friends and family first.

Shafer added that sexual assaults could be reported to several different institutions at SMU. If a student wants to press criminal charges then they must call SMU PD. A student can file a complaint with the Dean of Student Life’s office to press conduct charges.

Sexual assaults can also be reported to the Health Center and the Women’s Center. These reports are “strictly confidential,” according to Shafer.
