Briggs’ energy provides goals but not wins

The women’s soccer team, having yet to win a game on the road, dropped a pair of losses to Saint Mary’s and the University of California at Berkeley this weekend in the Saint Mary’s Invitational.

Coming off a win at home over the University of North Texas, the Mustangs headed into the tournament with their first win of the season under their belts, but were unable to establish a winning streak.

Junior Leslie Briggs got her first career goal in the fifth minute with a 40-yard blast over the head of Saint Mary’s goalkeeper, Tara Larson, putting the Mustangs up 1-0.

Tied at 1-1, SMU went on top again, this time with a header by sophomore Logan May from a 50-yard kick from teammate Kim Peabody. May, in her fourth career goal and first of the season, flicked in the header after receiving the free kick pass from Peabody. This was the first time all season for Peabody to get an assist.

Up 2-1 heading into the half, SMU started to falter, giving away two unassisted goals and the win.

Saint Mary’s scored the tying goal just three minutes into the second half with an unassisted shot from 25 yards back sailing over SMU goalkeeper Courtney Webb’s head.

The game winning goal came within the final ten minutes of play when Gaels player Christina Tognetti knocked in her own rebounded shot.

Sunday, the Mustangs faced a similar fate, losing 4-2 to No. 9 Cal (5-1-0), despite a goal in the final five minutes by freshman Kenzie Scovill.

The Bears pulled ahead 3-0 in under 20 minutes, with Alex Morgan scoring back-to-back goals, one of which was assisted by Omarsdottir.

The Mustangs answered back one minute after Morgan’s second goal when Briggs, in her second career goal and second of the season, received a pass from teammate Kristin Medeiros and nailed a shot from 18 yards back inside the right post.

Cal got their final goal in the 80th minute with an unassisted shot from 18 yards back by Lisa Kervorkian.

In a last effort, SMU’s Scovill knocked in a corner kick from May, but SMU failed to rally for the win.

The Mustangs will play the University of San Antonio on Friday on the road, but will return to Westcott Field on Sept. 20 to host the No. 2 University of Portland at 1:30 p.m.
