Kraft leads team with first-place finish in Gopher Invite

The men’s golf team won its first event of the season Monday with a 10-stroke victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks (855-865) at the Gopher Invite in Wayzata, Minn.

Junior Kelly Kraft took medalist honors with a 15-under 201, including a course-record 64 in round 3 on Monday. His score was seven strokes better than Minnesota’s Ben Pisani, who finished in second place.

Kraft was one of three Mustangs to finish in the top 12, joined by sophomores Marc Sambol and Matt Schovee. Sambol shot a 217 to finish one stroke over par, while Schovee came back from a rough second round and tied for 12th on the individual leader board with a 2-over 218.

After the first two rounds on Sunday, SMU led the host Gophers by two strokes before tallying a tournament-low 280 as a team, Monday afternoon. Kraft trailed Pisani by one at 7-under, only to outscore the local favorite by nine strokes in the final round.

SMU finished 9-under 855 for 54 holes on the par 72, 7,020 yard, Tom Fazio-designed Spring Hill Golf Club.

Next up for the team is the Adams Cup in Providence, R.I., on Sept. 21 and 22.
