The Mustangs scored a touchdown at the end of the third quarter to take a 35-23 lead. But Houston outscored SMU 21-3 in the fourth quarter, including a touchdown with 24 seconds left to win the game 44-38.
The Mustangs scored on three of their first four drives of the game and led 21-7 with eight minutes left in the half. But a Bo Levi Mitchell fumble gave Houston a short field and the Cougars capitalized and cut the lead to seven.
Mitchell threw to Emmanuel Sanders twice for touchdown passes, 17 and 10 yards each. The two touchdown receptions gives Sanders the all-time career receiving touchdowns record at SMU with 26.
Mitchell found the end zone on his own with a four-yard run.
Sanders leads receivers with seven catches for 63 yards, Andrew McKinney leads rushers with two carries for 17 yards.
Don Meredith was honored at halftime. Meredith’s No. 17 jersey was retired by SMU. It is the sixth number retired by the Mustangs.
