Rowing races past Texas

The SMU rowing team had a winning weekend at the Head of the Colorado Regatta in Austin. The Mustangs had four first place finishes, including the varsity eight competition.

The varsity eight-open race took first in 17:18.5 and included rowers Lindsay Schmidt, Julie Pollard, Amanda DeGroff, Ellen Cieszkiewicz, Alexa Tuszynski, Alex Austin, Meg Gaab, Krystal Kulka and Elizabeth Hagerty. This is the first time SMU rowing has beaten the University of Texas.

SMU also finished first in the women’s open-four race with rowers Alexa Tuszynski, Alex Austin, Krystal Kulka and Elizabeth Hagerty. They beat the Austin Rowing Club and the University of Texas with a time of 19:34.85.

The Mustangs also took first and second in the women’s open-two, beating the Bay Area Rowing Club. In first with a time of 20:39.43 were Meg Gaab and Krystal Kulka. Lindsay Schmidt and Amanda DeGroff placed second with a time of 24:51.82.

The SMU rowing team heads to Chattanooga, Tenn., on Nov. 4 to participate in the Head of the Hooch. This will be the team’s last competition of 2006.
